Tesco launches major UK power development

Tesco announced Oct. 29 the purchase of energy from five new onshore wind farms and one new solar farm to begin powering its U.K. stores in 2020, expected to save 90,000 tons of CO2 per year.

The retailer previously committed to use 100% renewable electricity across its operations by 2030 and generate 10% of its electricity use from on-site systems. The newest project to source clean energy will see the creation of these new renewable energy facilities in Scotland, as well as the installation of 335,000 square meters of solar panels on top of 187 of Tesco’s stores.

“Our supply chain and long-term business sustainability depend on the health of the natural environment,” Jason Tarry, Tesco UK and ROI CEO, said in a statement. “This project represents a major milestone in our journey to using 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030.”

Tesco claims the project will be the biggest of its type ever completed by a retailed in the U.K. and will create more than 400 new jobs.
