Yum! Brands restaurants go green

Yum! Brands announced that more than one-third of their new restaurants are meeting the requirements of the company’s Green Building efforts that provide guidelines for reducing energy and water consumption and constructing buildings to leave a smaller footprint.

The company’s recently released 2017 Global Citizenship & Sustainability Report stated Yum Brands’ Green Buildings goal to "design, build and operate green buildings to be measurably more sustainable using green building standards to drive reductions in energy consumption, water use, GHG emissions and waste, all while reporting annual progress."  Specifically, these goals include reducing average restaurant energy and GHG emissions by an additional 10 percent by the end of 2025.

"As Yum! Brands grows KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell around the world, we take our role as a global citizen and our impact on society and the environment seriously," said Greg Creed, CEO, Yum! Brands, Inc. "In line with Yum! Brands' Recipe for Growth to become more focused, franchised and efficient, we've created a Recipe for Good - our updated global citizenship and sustainability strategy that outlines our public commitments concerning food, planet, and people. I'm proud of the progress we're making, as well as our growing efforts to listen and engage more intently with our stakeholders on priority issues that are material to our business."

The report said that more efficient equipment, as well as tools that allow restaurants to monitor and manage their consumption, are leading to lower energy use and, therefore, lower emissions. Since 2005, these improvements have saved an estimated 4.3 billion MWh of electricity through a 22% reduction in energy use. The report noted that all environmental initiatives undertaken by Yum! Brands, including building improvements and environmentally responsible sourcing, “are examined through the lens of reducing GHG emissions and addressing climate change.”

Yum! Brands, Inc., based in Louisville, Ky., has more than 45,000 restaurants in more than 135 countries and territories.
