Tesla approved to build largest U.S. EV charging site in Pasadena
Tesla will begin building the largest fast-charging site for electric vehicles in the western United States in Pasadena, Calif.
The Pasadena City Council voted 7-0 on March 11 to authorize a five-year agreement with the electric carmaker to create 44 public-access fast-chargers on the roof level of a Pasadena parking garage, the Pasadena Star-News reports.
Under the agreement, Tesla would pay for 24 chargers for Tesla vehicles only and install the infrastructure that would allow Pasadena Water and Power to add 20 fast-charging stations for non-Tesla vehicles. The city estimates that the wiring would save them $140,000 in capital costs.
The "Level 3" fast chargers can provide 80% of a long-range electric car's power in 20-30 minutes.
Tesla has been the top seller of electric cars in California since November and makes three models of all-electric cars that travel more than 200 miles on a single charge.
This would be Pasadena's first public Tesla charging station; it currents has one direct current fast charger for electric vehicles.
"This is a new model," said Joel Levin, executive director of an L.A.-based group advocating for more public plugs. "Putting in charging station groupings in denser areas for people with longer-range vehicles who live in apartments. They can charge there once a week and they are good. It is really cutting edge."
