CEMEX to reduce European emissions 55% as 2020 goal is met
CEMEX announced Sept. 24 that they are committed to reducing the emissions from their European operations by at least 55% before 2030.
The building materials company expects to reach their target of reducing European emissions from cementitious materials by 35%, which was originally targeted for 2030, by the end of 2020. This goal was announced earlier this year.
Other initiatives include CEMEX’s conversion of fossil fuel use to alternative fuel sources by 60% up to this point. Additionally, they introduced the first carbon neutral concrete, Vertua, in the U.K. and France.
“We welcome the clarification from the European Commission President and are proud to be the first building materials company to align with the commitment. We look forward to advancing investment, research and development to decarbonize our operations,” CEO Fernando A. Gonzalez said in a statement. “Our European business operates in an environment that has driven continuous improvement, and as a result, by the end of this year, we expect to have reduced our carbon emissions by 35% compared to the 1990 baseline. I am very proud of the resourcefulness and determination of our team to hit this milestone in Europe ten years ahead of the CEMEX global 2030 target.”
