Colgate-Palmolive eyes net zero by 2040, 100% RE by 2030
Colgate-Palmolive announced Nov. 18 its sustainability strategy for 2025 and beyond, which includes a target to source 100% renewable electricity for its global operations by 2030 and achieve net zero carbon emissions globally by 2040.
The household consumer goods manufacturer also intends to build 100 % of new manufacturing sites with LEED certification by 2025 and eliminate one-third of new plastics to facilitate the transition to 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable plastic packaging by 2025.
As of the end of 2019, Colgate-Palmolive had already surpassed its 2020 goal of reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions 25% since 2002, seeing a 32% total reduction. 28% of its electricity was sourced from renewable energy and 19 of its buildings were LEED certified.
“Because our Colgate brand is in more homes than any other, we can – and will – create a healthier, more sustainable future for all,” Noel Wallace, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Colgate-Palmolive, said in a statement. “We view environmental and social stewardship as enterprise-wide catalysts for growth, and we’re committed to raising the bar and ensuring sustainability is integrated into all aspects of our company – from what we make to how we work to how we go to market.”
In 2019, Colgate purchased 230,000 MWh of Green-e certified wind power renewable energy certificates and also began to look at ways to build out electric vehicle charging infrastructure at its locations.
Moving forward, the company also intends to limit the carbon emissions that result from its supply chain by focusing on supplier, engagement, carbon-intensive materials, no deforestation and sustainable and efficient logistics.
