Mercedes-Benz Plans to Be All-Electric by the End of the Decade
Mercedes-Benz announced July 22 that all new vehicle architectures will be all-electric by 2025.
The automaker plans to release three new electric-only architectures in 2025 and will be able to offer customers an all-electric alternative for every model it makes. By 2022, Mercedes-Benz will have battery electric vehicles in all segments the company serves, with the full intention to be all-electric by the end of the decade.
“The EV shift is picking up speed - especially in the luxury segment, where Mercedes-Benz belongs. The tipping point is getting closer and we will be ready as markets switch to electric-only by the end of this decade,” Ola Källenius, CEO of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, said in a statement. “This step marks a profound reallocation of capital. By managing this faster transformation while safeguarding our profitability targets, we will ensure the enduring success of Mercedes-Benz. Thanks to our highly qualified and motivated workforce, I am convinced that we will be successful in this exciting new era.”
The company plans to increase its investment into R&D of battery electric vehicles to over €40 billion between 2022 and 2030.
Through the acquisition of UK electric motor company YASA, Mercedes-Benz will further develop its all-electric motors and accompanying technology. The company will need a battery capacity of more than 200 GWh and plans to set up eight Gigafactories for producing battery cells while working with international partners on further battery development.
Other initiatives to help with the roll-out include an emphasis on increasing charging stations available around the world, particularly by supporting Shell’s Recharge network across Europe, China and North America, and ensuring that all production facilities of these new models are carbon neutral by 2022.
