The Container Store Decreases Energy Use by 7%

The Container Store Group, Inc. announced the company lowered energy consumption by 7.1% between 2022 and 2023 as a result of ongoing energy efficiency initiatives.

The company —  a specialty retailer of organizing solutions, custom spaces and in-home services — is also focusing on its supply chain by optimizing logistics in addition to publishing Scope 3 emissions for the first time.

As detailed in its third annual Sustainability Report, to reduce fuel usage and the number of trucks on the road, The Container Store converted shipments from trucks to trains in areas where there are regular loads. The company also started co-loading multiple stores onto a single truck as smaller stores opened, thus lowering emissions.

Where it is feasible, the company adopted drop-shipping, which involves shipping products directly from the vendor to the customer — reducing emissions by cutting intermediary transportation modes.

Additionally, using an enhancement to existing technology, the company partnered with key vendor partners to source from locations closer to its distribution centers.

The company's procurement team has been developing a strategy to reduce the number of deliveries of supplies to stores to decrease the number of trucks on the road.

“Our third year highlights the measurable impact we are making towards building a better world while serving our valuable customers and stakeholders. We are carrying the momentum of prior years to advance our sustainability efforts, making meaningful progress every day,” said Satish Malhotra, CEO and President of The Container Store, in a statement. “By prioritizing sustainable practices, the company has created new opportunities for innovation, reduced operational risks, and strengthened relationships that drive long-term value for the company.”
