Sprint targets carbon neutrality by 2025
Sprint announced Nov. 14 its new commitment to source 100% renewable electricity across its entire operations by 2025 following several PPAs and efficiency initiatives in the last year.
Sprint has previously rolled out efficiency projects, including an intelligent energy system in its headquarters that has reduced energy consumption by 6% and intelligent thermostats in its retail locations that have reduced energy consumption by 10-14%. Additionally, nearly 75% of Sprint’s commercial properties operate under a green lease.
“We recognize the global importance of operating a sustainable company – it’s the right thing to do and it makes good business sense,” Sprint President and CEO Michel Combes, said in a statement. “I’m proud that Sprint will be among the companies around the world committed to decreasing our carbon footprint and addressing the impacts of climate change. This is an issue that requires immediate and bold action, and that is why Sprint is stepping up in a big way.”
The company is also involved in two 12-year VPPAs, the first being with the Maryneal wind project in Texas. The second is part of an aggregation agreement with Apple, eBay and Samsung to purchase energy from another wind project in Texas, announced just last week.
Other sustainability initiatives that the communications company previously committed to include diverting 50% of operational waste from landfills by 2025 and reusing or recycling 100% of its electronic waste.
