Houston Commercial Office Building to Receive 250kW Rooftop Solar

The FR8T Yard commercial office building in Houston, Texas, will soon be installing a 250 kW rooftop solar system to offset its energy use and reduce energy costs.

The project, once completed, will be one of Houston’s largest commercial solar installations. The solar installation will be completed by XL Solar Partners, encouraged by Google’s Project Sunroof naming Houston as the most promising city in the U.S. for solar potential.

The solar installation will allow FR8T Yard to export excess power into the local grid through a net metering system. The project should save 125 megatons of CO2 emissions per year.

“It’s encouraging to watch solar energy catching on for commercial uses in Houston,” Larry Atherton, president of the FR8T Yard development, said in a statement. “For years, homeowners realized benefit of solar to lower energy costs and help the environment, and we hope our system will inspire other businesses to install rooftop solar systems. This project represents a giant step toward becoming a net-zero carbon facility, and we look forward to decades of environmental stewardship with our tenants.”

The City of Houston is currently the largest municipal user of renewable energy in the country and is committed to purchasing 100% renewable energy. It is estimated that Houston has the potential to generate 18,940 GWh of rooftop solar energy per year.
