BMW Invests in Mexico Plant to Build EVs
The BMW Group is investing 800 million euros to make its plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, ready for the NEUE KLASSE, its electric vehicles.
Three different models are already rolling off the production line as the BMW Group is accelerating its production of electric vehicles.
The company’s goal is for 50% of global BMW vehicle sales to be fully electric before 2030.
“We are systematically gearing our production network towards electromobility,” said Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production, in a statement. “The first cars of the NEUE KLASSE will come off the production line at our plant in Debrecen, Hungary, starting in 2025, followed by the main plant in Munich. We will achieve additional volumes by integrating the NEUE KLASSE at Plant San Luis Potosí from 2027 onwards.”
A large part of the investment costs, 500 million euros, will go towards constructing a local high-voltage battery assembly plant. Electricity comes from the factory’s own 70,000-square-meter solar plant on the premises.
