MGM Resorts announces 100 MW solar array
MGM Resorts International announced on Apr. 19 that it will develop a 100-megawatt solar photovoltaic array in partnership with Invenergy. MGM will purchase all the energy generated by the project, located 25 miles north of Las Vegas, to power its 13 properties on the Las Vegas Strip.
"Protecting the planet is a business imperative for MGM Resorts and it is our responsibility to find innovative ways where we can use clean energy to power our resorts," said Jim Murren, chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International, in a statement. "Incorporating renewable energy into MGM's portfolio will fundamentally reduce MGM's environmental footprint."
The MGM-Invenergy Solar Project will consist of approximately 336,000 panels on 640 acres of land within the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's Dry Lake Solar Energy Zone. Once operational—by the end of 2020-- the project is expected to generate approximately $20 million of sales and property tax revenues as well as indirect economic benefits to local businesses like hotels and restaurants, while also reducing carbon emissions.
MGM Resorts' properties along the Las Vegas strip include Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, the Bellagio, Mirage, Aria, MGM Grand and Circus Circus. MGM currently operates the nation's largest contiguous rooftop solar array, located on the roof of the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
