Google uses AI to predict wind output
Google has partnered with DeepMind to apply machine learning algorithms to 700 megawatts of wind power capacity in the central U.S. that are part of Google’s global fleet of renewable energy projects, with the goal of strengthening the business case for wind power and driving further adoption of carbon-free energy on electric grids worldwide.

GM partners for wind energy in Michigan
General Motors announced an agreement to purchase 300,000 megawatt hours of wind energy through DTE Energy’s MIGreenPower program. The energy sourced will be enough to power 100% of GM’s global technical center in Warren and their Detroit-based operations at the Renaissance Center.

Ford signs green tariff for locally-sourced wind
Ford Motor Company will soon power several of its Michigan facilities with 100% locally sourced renewable energy. The company also plans to announce a new Global Carbon Reduction Strategy, which will focus on renewable energy in conjunction with the launch of the company’s 20th annual Sustainability Report in June.

Nike signs its first PPA in Europe
Nike signed its first European clean energy deal, acquiring 40 MW of power from the Cavar wind complex in northern Spain that will be completed in 2020. The company has set a goal of having all its offices in Europe powered by renewable energy by 2020.

The Texas Power Pool has been formed to offer a new power purchasing option for Texas public entities to utilize aggregated renewable energy. Texas Power Pool services include competitive procurement of utility-scale renewables and on-site solar for state agencies, higher education, cities, independent school districts, water districts, and other public entities across Texas, including cooperative and municipal utility regions.

Johnson Controls Building Technologies & Solutions has selected one of its largest facilities as the first of its plants to shift 100% its electricity to wind power. The plant, located in Wichita, KS, will source power from a wind farm currently being built near the facility.

University of Kansas signs wind PPA
The University of Kansas has signed a 20-year wind PPA to cover roughly 100% of its electricity needs. The agreement, signed with Westar Energy, will provide the campus with 31 MW from the 300-MW Soldier Creek Wind farm, which is expected to begin operations by the end of 2020.
